The strength of El Nino determines the impact on total rainfall in California. It also determines the amount / the strength of the drought. The concentrated rain bands above California account for 40% of California’s water supply, meaning that a drought could have dire consequences in California. Severe droughts and heat can also cause fires in tropical rainforests which accelerate carbon dioxide build-up in the atmosphere and reduce air quality. El Niño has been blamed for both the California and Australian bush fires. In addition there was very dry weather in Indonesia, prolonged drought n South Africa and droughts in Ethiopia causing flood shortages. There were floods in California and south America
